I think the concept of the 'good ol' Canadian boy' has to be the captain is a notion that has been fading VERY quickly since the 80's.

By my count 8(?) teams have EU / Rus captains. 4 have none. Based on ratios of NHL players, that isn't really all that disparate anymore.

He failed to score 20 goals or even get 30 points for the past 4 years. He was their captain and making almost $6M per year. More was needed.

He used to be a 20-30 goal / 50-60 point guy.

Could it be in the past they just couldn't speak English? lol Malkin still can't speak proper English

But in all seriousness, I think it more to do with the captain being "homegrown material" and more of a gritty, physical, in-your-face type leader
